This document records the process and draws out themes from the dialogue and reflections of a group of youth street workers in the Manchester area, following the death from a knife incident of a 14-year old boy. It tries to distil and rationalise the workers’ deep emotions, heaviness and attempts to care for the young people and the community affected by this tragedy. It also highlights both the frustrations we experience, and joys associated with the many often simple accomplishments of being detached youth workers on a long-term basis within a community.
